A striking new watch that glimmers with the hues of the depths of the sea

Since the 1950s Blancpain have been known as the name connected with only the very best diving watches in the world. Originally launching the first modern diving watch, the Fifty Fathoms, in 1953, Blancpain have since become fully committed to developing spectacular diving watches and conserving the world’s oceans through extensive research and innovative horological design.

Welcoming the original vintage inspired Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe in 2013, Blancpain have recently decided to launch a new model and extend the range, a 38mm model in a shade of blue that is reminiscent of the very depths of the ocean.

One of the things that you’ll notice straight away about the piece is its nods to its heritage. Echoing the design features that form the core identity of the Fifty Fathoms such as the defined contours and vintage style hands, the new edition has also modernised the feel of the watch by adding new design features including hour markers made of Liquidmetal (a material known for its deformation resistance and long term stability) as well as a blue ceramic face that matches the undersea colour palette of the rest of the watch.

As with all self respecting diving watches this new 38mm model is fitted with a unidirectional bezel rotating counter-clockwise by small notches. A further harking back to the original Fifty Fathoms, the luminescent dot serves an index for divers whilst their underwater, enabling accurate alignment with the minutes hand and thereby defining the start of a given dive time.

Powered by Caliber 1150 and water resistant to up to 300 metres, the watch is also characterised by its robust movement which, along with its two series coupled barrels, ensure that the watch has a 100 hour power reserve as well guaranteeing constant energy - a significant technological feat that proves once again that Blancpain are the masters of diving watches.

This modern and technologically advanced movement is viewable through the watch’s sapphire crystal case back, and here you can also see the silicon balance spring – a relatively recent addition to the world of horology that holds a number of benefits.

Low in density so that it makes the watch lighter and easier to wear, the balance spring also has greater shock resistance and is impervious to magnetic fields, allowing the watch to remain accurate and working exactly as it should be. These properties also grant the balance spring an almost perfect geometry that enhances the movement’s isochronism, further improving the precision of the watch as well.

Function aside, and it is the blue makeover that definitely makes this timepiece in a league of its own. Beautifully coloured in every element, the deep blue hue adds a new and timeless connection between the timepiece and the sea, helping it stand out as a truly spectacular design.

A smart and sophisticated diving watch that has not only expanded Blancpain’s mastery over this realm of horology but taken it to the next level as well, the new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe model is the perfect choice for anybody who wants embrace Blancpain’s most celebrated design with a sophisticated twist of sapphire blue.
